Atlanta Watershed Capital Improvments Project Updates

Water Supply Program—Quarry/ Chattahoochee

The Water Supply Program will increase the Atlanta’s water reserve to more than 30 days. It will reduce corrective and emergency maintenance of raw water delivery pipelines and enhance operational reliability with improved automation and system redundancy. Crews are currently constructing a five-mile underground tunnel to connect the Chattahoochee River to the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and the new 2.4 billion gallon reservoir at the site of the former Bellwood Quarry. 

UPDATE: The tunnel boring machine (TBM), “Driller Mike” has reached the Hemphill Water Treatment Plant and has constructed nearly two miles of the five-mile tunnel.

Rodney Cook Sr. Park—Historic Vine City

The purpose of the Cook Park project is to enhance system efficiency and reliability, to provide essential capacity relief and to reduce flooding in Cook Park. The project consists of installing a new capacity relief storage facility in the area, installing 2,200 linear feet of 60-inch capacity relief trunk line, re-routing 1,100 LF of 96-inch combined trunk sewer installing pipeline in the right-of-way along street in the Vine City area, and remediating and relocating sewers. 

UPDATE: This month, fencing will be installed around the park site in preparation for construction mobilization.

 Upper Proctor Creek – Boone Boulevard Green Infrastructure

This project will provide capacity relief to the North Avenue combined sewer system, increase ground water recharge and reduce heat island effect from the surface pavement, add aesthetic enhancements including bicycle lanes and pedestrian improvements, and reduce stormwater runoff and enhance water quality. 

UPDATE: Sidewalk and stormwater planter box installation continues along Boone Boulevard between Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard and Sunset Avenue.

Citywide Water Main Installation

Crews are upgrading water mains in the following locations: Beecher Street between Donnelly Avenue SW and S. Alvarado Terrace SW, Cascade Road between Childress Drive SW and Central Villa Drive SW, Niskey Lake Road between Danforth Road SW and Ryland Trail SW, Peachtree Battle Avenue between Bohler Road NW and Northside Drive NW, and Richland Road between

Westmont Road SW and Rochelle Drive SW. Expected Completion: 12/2017
